These are all symptoms of a painful jaw joint condition called temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ. For patients experiencing symptoms of this issue, it can be quite debilitating and greatly affect their quality of life.

Dr. Cordes offers treatment for TMJ that brings great relief and will help patients who struggle with TMJ feel comfortable again.

What Is TMJ?

Your temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull. This is one of the most complex joints in your body, as it allows you to move your jaw in multiple directions such as up and down and left and right. When this joint isn’t functioning correctly you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Your jaw locking open or closed
  • Your jaw joint popping or clicking when you open or close your mouth
  • Pain or tenderness when biting down
  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Earaches

TMJ symptoms may start off small and get progressively worse over time as the joint becomes even more debilitated. Even if you are not experiencing severe pain now, let Dr. Cordes know if you are experiencing any of these symptoms so you can be proactive about getting treatment if necessary.

What Causes TMJ?

There are a number of different factors that could cause or contribute to TMJ pain such as:

  • Bruxism: This is chronic clenching and grinding your teeth, usually at night while you sleep.
  • A misaligned bite: When your bite is not properly aligned, it can lead to problems or pain in your jaw joint.
  • An injury, trauma, or accident: These can all cause misalignment of your joint, resulting in TMJ pain.
  • Stress or anxiety: Stress may cause teeth grinding or clenching, resulting in TMJ issues.
  • Arthritis or other inflammatory issues: Arthritis can contribute to jaw joint pain.

The causes of TMJ are typically unique for each patient and may be a combination of factors working together to produce pain.

Many cases of TMJ can be treated with a custom mouthguard that Dr. Cordes designs based on your specific needs. Typically worn at night, mouthguards are comfortable and easy for patients to get used to. They’re designed to slightly reposition the jaw to help relax muscles and alleviate pain.
